Monterrey fills a broad valley in the Sierra Madre Oriental, and mountains frame it on almost every side. To the east rises Cerro de la Silla, its saddle-shaped profile the symbol of the city, while Cerro de las Mitras stands to the west. The street grid spreads across the flat ground and stops abruptly at the foot of the slopes.
The Santa Catarina River crosses the city from west to east, usually a wide, dry riverbed flanked by highways. North of it, the Macroplaza forms a long chain of plazas and gardens through the centre. A Monterrey map poster shows how a huge industrial metropolis has been shaped by the mountains that surround it.
Founded in 1596, Monterrey grew into one of Mexico's main industrial centres, famous for steel, brewing and glass. Parque Fundidora now occupies the grounds of a former steelworks east of the centre, its old blast furnaces preserved among lawns and trails.
