Castle ridge
The high ground running through the village holds Nakagusuku Castle. Roads climb and curve along the ridge, which gives the map a strong diagonal structure.

关于地图
Nakagusuku Map Poster & Print
Nakagusuku is a village on the east side of central Okinawa Island, stretched along a ridge above Nakagusuku Bay. From above, the land falls away from the high ground toward the coast, and the village’s roads and neighbourhoods follow that slope. Instead of one dense centre, the map shows small settlements, fields and wooded escarpments.
Its best-known feature is Nakagusuku Castle, a gusuku dating largely from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, whose limestone walls stand on the ridge. The castle is one of the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu, which UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site in 2000. Its walls follow the natural rock and are admired for their elegant curves.
A Nakagusuku map poster shows the ridge, the coastline of the bay and the network of roads that threads through the village’s scattered districts. The castle grounds appear as a quiet patch of green among the lines. The composition is about topography and history at once, and it reads beautifully in monochrome.

Nakagusuku Bay
The shoreline of the wide bay frames the village to the east, drawn as a long line that separates the settled slopes from open water.
Scattered hamlets
The village has no single centre. It consists of several small settlements separated by fields and wooded slopes, a pattern typical of rural Okinawa.

一张有意义的地图
Nakagusuku appeals to people with Okinawan roots, to visitors who have walked the castle walls, and to those who once lived nearby on the island. The map gathers ridge, bay and village into a single calm image.
