Nerekhta Map Poster & Print
Nerekhta lies in Kostroma Oblast, south-west of Kostroma, on the small river that shares its name. It is one of the older towns of the Upper Volga region, first recorded in the early thirteenth century, and in earlier centuries it grew prosperous on salt production. From above, the historic core sits close to the river, and streets fan out across the gently rising ground.
A number of historic churches stand among the low-rise blocks and mark the older parts of town. A railway junction on the edge of town links Nerekhta with Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Ivanovo. The tracks add firm straight lines to a map otherwise shaped by the river and old road routes.
