North Bergen stretches along the Hudson Palisades in New Jersey, across the river from Manhattan's Upper West Side. On the map it is a long, narrow shape. Dense streets run across the top of the ridge, the cliffs drop steeply to a strip of waterfront on the east, and on the west the land slopes down toward the marshes of the Hackensack Meadowlands.
Bergenline Avenue, one of the longest commercial streets in the state, runs through the township. James J. Braddock North Hudson County Park, named after the boxer who grew up in the area, has a lake and open ground in the northern part. Major road and rail routes cross the western lowlands, heading toward the Lincoln Tunnel and the city.
A North Bergen map poster captures a place defined by its landforms. There is the river on one side, the ridge in the middle and marshland on the other. The tight grid on the Palisades contrasts with the looser roads and wetland edges below, and the shape is unmistakable on the wall.

This long commercial avenue runs north–south through the township. It forms a straight, busy line down the centre of the grid on top of the ridge.
Meadowlands edge
To the west the land falls toward the Hackensack Meadowlands. There, highways, rail yards and marsh channels replace the tight residential streets.
