Mining districts
Separate neighbourhoods formed around individual mines, so on the map the city appears as a scatter of settlements joined by roads, not as one solid mass.

关于地图
Novoshakhtinsk Map Poster & Print
Novoshakhtinsk grew up in the twentieth century as a coal-mining town in the eastern Donbas, in Rostov Oblast close to the border with Ukraine. Its name means roughly 'new mining town', and the map still reflects that origin. Instead of one compact centre, the city is made up of several districts that formed around individual mines.
Between these districts lie open steppe, roads, and railway lines that once served the pits, and in places the conical shapes of spoil heaps rise from the flat land. The central area has a more regular pattern of streets and blocks. It contrasts with the looser, more scattered settlements further out.
A Novoshakhtinsk map poster shows a city whose layout was dictated by what lay underground. The scattered settlements, the straight streets and the long roads crossing the steppe make an unusual, spacious composition. The sheet has plenty of open space between the clusters of buildings, like the landscape itself.

Steppe spaces
Open land between the districts leaves large, calm areas on the poster. It emphasises the low, spread-out character of the town and its surroundings.
Central grid
The main part of town is laid out in regular blocks and straight streets. This clear, orderly pattern stands out amid the looser outlying areas.
