Offenburg is the seat of the Ortenau district in Baden-Württemberg, lying where the Kinzig river leaves the Black Forest and runs out into the Upper Rhine plain. On a map the contrast is immediate: dense streets and rail yards to the west and centre, and to the east the land folds into vineyards and forested valleys.
The historic core is a compact oval around the long main street, with the old town hall and the Salmen, the inn where the Offenburg Programme of 1847 set out democratic demands ahead of the revolution of 1848. Around it, later districts spread in looser blocks, and the railway, where the Rhine Valley line meets the Black Forest Railway, draws a strong line along the western side.
The Kinzig itself skirts the town, straightened and embanked, with paths along both banks. An Offenburg map poster framed to include the river and the first ridges captures the town's position as a threshold between plain and mountains, which is exactly how it feels to arrive there by train.
