Olsberg lies in the Hochsauerland district of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the upper valley of the Ruhr river among wooded hills. The town centre follows the valley floor, with the river, road and railway running close together, while side valleys hold the villages that make up the wider municipality.
Olsberg is a recognised Kneipp spa town, and its setting of forests and walking routes has long attracted visitors. Within its boundaries, near Bruchhausen, stand the Bruchhauser Steine, a group of large rock formations on the slopes of the Istenberg that are among the most distinctive natural landmarks of the Sauerland.
