Ormoc lies on the western coast of Leyte, where the island's interior hills open onto a sheltered bay facing the Camotes Sea. The compact centre sits right at the waterfront, with a port and a short grid of streets. From there, roads fan out across a wide lowland planted largely with sugarcane before climbing into the uplands.
Rivers shape the city in a way that is easy to read on a map. In November 1991, floodwaters from the Anilao and Malbasag rivers swept through Ormoc and killed thousands of people, one of the deadliest disasters in Philippine history. Today the rebuilt channels and their embankments are clear lines running through the urban area toward the bay.
An Ormoc map poster traces the curve of the bay, the port and the way the city spreads across its plain. Ormoc Bay also gave its name to a naval battle in late 1944, during the Leyte campaign of the Second World War.
