Ouarzazate lies on a high plateau south of the High Atlas in Morocco, often called the gateway to the Sahara. The town's plan is fairly simple. A long main avenue runs through the centre, with modern blocks on either side and the older Taourirt Kasbah at the eastern end. Around it, the land is open and dry.
East of the town, the El Mansour Eddahbi dam holds back a large reservoir, whose irregular shoreline is the most striking shape on the map. River valleys, lined with palm groves and villages, run through the arid terrain and form green threads in an otherwise sparse landscape.
Ouarzazate is known for its film studios, which have hosted many international productions, and for the nearby fortified village of Aït Benhaddou.
