Ourilândia do Norte is a municipality in the southeast of Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon. It is a young town that grew quickly in the late twentieth century as roads, farms and mining pushed into the region. Mining is still important, and a large nickel operation lies within the municipality. The wider area mixes cattle ranches, cleared land and remaining stretches of forest.
On the map, the town is a compact set of straight streets and rectangular blocks, laid out in the simple pattern common to new settlements on the Amazon frontier. The grid fades quickly into open land at its edges. Unpaved roads lead off in straight lines across the landscape, and streams wind through it, their courses traced by darker bands of remaining vegetation.
