Oxford sits where the Cherwell flows into the Thames, known locally as the Isis. From above, the historic centre is a dense grid of colleges, each built around its own quadrangles, with streets like the High and Broad Street threading between them. Meadows press in on several sides, keeping the old city compact and clearly defined.
It is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, with teaching recorded here from the late eleventh century. The Radcliffe Camera, the Bodleian Library and Christ Church are among its best-known buildings, and Port Meadow to the northwest has been common grazing land for centuries.
