From above, Pālakkodu is a small town with a dense centre. Lanes gather where the roads from surrounding towns meet, and the built-up area thins quickly into irrigated fields, tanks and rocky outcrops. Few straight lines survive long here. The street pattern grew around trade routes rather than any planned grid, which gives the town an organic, slightly lopsided outline on paper.
The town lies in the Dharmapuri district of northwestern Tamil Nadu. This is upland country, broken by hills at the edge of the Eastern Ghats and farmed intensively between them. Agriculture shapes both the economy and the map: field boundaries, small reservoirs and cart tracks fill the space between the town and the neighbouring villages, and all of it shows as fine linework.
