Pão de Açúcar lies in the Alagoas sertão, on the left bank of the São Francisco River. On a map, the river dominates. It is a broad band of open water running alongside the town, and the settlement's short street grid lines up along the bank as if it grew outward from the waterline.
The town is compact. A few parallel streets run with the river, cross streets climb away from it, and beyond them the land becomes dry, open country. The far bank, across the water, belongs to another state, so the poster takes in a stretch of river that is also a border.
A Pão de Açúcar map poster sets a small town against one of Brazil's great rivers. The name, shared with the famous peak in Rio de Janeiro, refers to the rounded high ground by the town. In this region the São Francisco has long been the road, the water supply and the main reason for settlement.
