Pāthri is in the Parbhani district of Maharashtra, in the Marathwada region. It lies on the open plains of the Deccan, north of the Godavari River. On a map the town is a compact cluster of narrow streets, with roads fanning out across flat farmland towards neighbouring villages and the district headquarters.
The town is widely known through a local tradition that identifies it as the birthplace of Sai Baba of Shirdi. For this reason it receives a steady flow of visitors, and a temple associated with this tradition stands in the town. Beyond that, it remains a market centre for the surrounding agricultural villages.
