Piatã is in the Chapada Diamantina, the upland region of central Bahia known for its tabletop mountains and deep valleys. The town sits at a high elevation and is often cited as one of the highest towns in Brazil's Northeast, which gives it a cooler climate than most of the state. On a map it is a small, compact cluster of streets in wide, open terrain.
The town's centre is a modest grid, and the few roads leading out of it curve along the contours of the surrounding hills. In recent years the Piatã area has gained a reputation for specialty coffee grown at altitude, and farms spread across the slopes and plateaus outside town.
