Pilón lies on the southern coast of Granma Province in eastern Cuba, where the Sierra Maestra comes close to the Caribbean. On a map the town sits on a narrow coastal strip, with the sea along one side and higher ground rising behind it.
The street pattern is compact and simple, stretching along the shore with roads leading inland toward the hills. Sugar production shaped the town's economy for much of its history, and the coastal road connects Pilón with Marea del Portillo and other settlements along this relatively remote stretch of coastline.
