Pingyi is the seat of Pingyi County, which is administered by the city of Linyi in southern Shandong. It lies in the Yimeng area, a hilly region that includes Mount Meng, one of the province's best-known peaks. From above, the town sits on lower ground, with ridges and terraced slopes in the surrounding countryside.
The town plan is a clear modern grid. Wide main roads run in straight lines, and large blocks hold housing, schools and markets.
