Pisa is built on both banks of the Arno, a few kilometres before the river reaches the Tyrrhenian Sea. On a map its long, gentle curve splits the historic centre in two, lined by the continuous riverside streets known as the Lungarni and crossed by a series of bridges. Around the core, long stretches of the medieval walls still trace an irregular ring.
In the northwestern corner of the walls lies the Piazza dei Miracoli, where the cathedral, the baptistery, the Camposanto and the Leaning Tower stand on an open lawn. On the map it appears as a rare expanse of space in an otherwise dense pattern of narrow streets, small squares and courtyards dating back to Pisa's era as a maritime republic.
Pisa is also a university city, home to one of Italy's oldest universities and the Scuola Normale Superiore, and it is the birthplace of Galileo Galilei.
