Pontian Besar is on the south-west coast of Johor, facing the Strait of Malacca. The land here is very flat and low, and the coastline is the defining feature on a map. It is a long, gently curved shore, broken by river mouths and edged with mangroves and mudflats.
Inland, the landscape is divided into long, straight plantation plots and drainage channels, a geometric pattern typical of the reclaimed coastal plains of southern Johor. The towns and villages form small clusters along the main coastal road, with the densest part around Pontian Kechil.
