Walled core
The medieval centre forms a tight, irregular cluster of lanes around the cathedral and castle, clearly set apart from the more open modern districts.

关于地图
Portalegre Map Poster & Print
Portalegre is the capital of the northern Alentejo district, built on a hillside at the foot of the Serra de São Mamede near the Spanish border. From above, the historic centre is a compact knot of narrow streets that once lay within walls, crowned by the cathedral and the remains of a castle. Around it, newer districts extend across the lower slopes in looser, broader patterns.
The city's cathedral dates from the sixteenth century, and Portalegre became known for its textile industry, particularly the hand-woven Portalegre tapestries, a craft still associated with the city. The surrounding landscape shifts from the green, forested slopes of the serra to the open cork oak and olive country typical of the Alentejo.
A Portalegre map poster reveals the layering of the city. The irregular old core stands out as a dense cluster, bounded by the line of the former walls, while roads climb away toward the serra in winding curves. It is a subtle, balanced image of a small inland capital shaped by a hill, a fortress and centuries of craft.

Ring of avenues
Broader streets follow the old wall line and loop around the centre, forming a clear boundary between historic and newer Portalegre.
