Prayagraj, known for centuries as Allahabad, sits on a peninsula between the Ganges and the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh. The rivers join at the eastern tip of the city, at the Triveni Sangam, traditionally held to be the meeting point with a third, mythical river, the Saraswati. On a map, the two broad channels wrap around the urban area to the north, east and south.

The Civil Lines, laid out by the British in the nineteenth century, has a spacious grid of straight roads and large plots, and the university and cantonment add wide, open grounds. Every twelve years the sandbanks at the Sangam host the Kumbh Mela, one of the largest gatherings of people on earth, when a temporary city of tents, pontoon bridges and roads is built on the floodplain. The Mughal emperor Akbar built a fort here in the sixteenth century, overlooking the confluence. The map preserves the permanent city that frames this extraordinary seasonal one.
