Prescott lies in central Arizona at around a mile above sea level, among pine forest and granite outcrops. Its centre is organised around Courthouse Plaza, a full city block of lawn and trees with the Yavapai County Courthouse in the middle. Streets form a regular grid around it, and the historic saloon strip known as Whiskey Row faces the plaza on its west side.
Beyond the grid the city spreads into hilly neighbourhoods with winding roads. Granite Creek runs through town, and to the north lie Watson Lake and Willow Lake, set among the rounded boulders of the Granite Dells. To the west, Thumb Butte rises above the forest as a landmark visible from much of the city.
Prescott served as the capital of Arizona Territory in its early years and holds a rodeo tradition dating back to 1888. A Prescott map poster captures the orderly square at its heart and the rougher landscape of creeks, lakes and granite surrounding it.
