Puerto Aysén lies in the Aysén Region of southern Chile, near the mouth of the Aysén river where it meets a fjord. The town grew as a port, but silt from the river made the harbour shallow, and shipping moved to nearby Puerto Chacabuco. On the map, the streets fill a narrow stretch of flat land between the river and steep, forested slopes.
The Presidente Ibáñez bridge crosses the Aysén river here. It is a long suspension bridge and one of the town's best-known structures. Around Puerto Aysén, the landscape is a mix of mountains, rivers and fjords, with some of the heaviest rainfall in Chile.
