Roseto degli Abruzzi stretches along the Adriatic coast in the province of Teramo. On the map it is mostly a long strip: a straight shoreline with a wide beach, a railway and main road running parallel to it, and a regular grid of streets between them. The town is much longer than it is wide, pressed between the sea and the rising hills.
Inland, on a hilltop, is Montepagano, the historic village the modern town grew from as people moved down to the coast. Its tight, winding lanes contrast sharply with the straight seafront blocks below. Rivers reach the sea at either end of the municipality, and the hills behind are criss-crossed by country roads.
