Sabanitas sits in the province of Colón, near the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal. The town grew along the Transisthmian highway, which links Colón with Panama City, and on a map it forms a long, linear pattern of streets and settlements following the road.
At Sabanitas, a road branches off toward the Caribbean coast and the historic port of Portobelo. This junction gives the town its character as a crossroads, with shops, markets and homes gathered around the meeting point of the two routes.
