Sevierville is the county seat of Sevier County, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in east Tennessee. On a map its older core sits near the forks of the Little Pigeon River, where the courthouse streets form a compact centre. From there development stretches out along the main highways, most clearly along the parkway heading south towards Pigeon Forge and the mountains.
The town is widely known as the hometown of Dolly Parton, who grew up in the Sevier County hills and is honoured by a statue on the courthouse lawn. It is also a main gateway for visitors heading to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and that role shows in its long corridors of roads.
A Sevierville map poster captures the contrast between the tight courthouse centre, the river threading through it and the looser suburban roads that follow the valleys. At the edges the roads begin to twist as the terrain rises, a sign that the mountains are close even though they do not appear on the page.
