Soba lies in the north of Kaduna State in Nigeria, in savanna country not far from Zaria, and is the headquarters of Soba Local Government Area. From above, the town has a layout typical of the region: a dense older core of compounds and narrow lanes, with newer streets running straighter and wider as the town spreads outward toward the fields.
Agriculture defines the surrounding land, and on a map the town sits within a broad pattern of farm plots, tracks and small villages. Roads connect Soba to Zaria and other centres of the state, and these give the composition its main lines. The contrast between the tightly packed older quarters and the more regular newer blocks makes the town more interesting on paper than its size might suggest.
