Sonneberg Map Poster & Print
Sonneberg lies in the far south of Thuringia, where the valley of the Röthen opens out below the wooded slopes of the Thuringian highlands. The map shows a town stretched along its valley floor, with streets climbing the hillsides to the north and the built-up area running almost without a break into the neighbouring Bavarian town of Neustadt bei Coburg to the south.
That continuity is recent. For four decades the inner German border ran between the two towns, and Sonneberg sat at the edge of the East. Long before that it was famous for toys. Its workshops supplied dolls and wooden figures worldwide, and the German Toy Museum in the town still tells that story.
A Sonneberg map poster holds both of these histories quietly: a craft town shaped by its valley, and a street network that once stopped at a fence and now simply carries on. It is a small map with a surprisingly large amount of story in it.
