Stavropol Map Poster & Print
Stavropol stands on the Stavropol Upland, one of the highest large cities in European Russia, overlooking the steppe to the north of the Caucasus. On a map the city spreads across uneven ground. Long straight avenues cross it, while forested ravines and green belts cut into the street pattern and leave open gaps within the urban area.
The historic centre grew around Fortress Hill, where the original fortifications stood. From there, Karl Marx Prospekt and other main streets form the old core. Later districts spread out in regular blocks, with large Soviet-era residential areas to the north and west. Parks and forests, some reaching deep into the city, give the map an unusual amount of green space.
Stavropol was founded in 1777 as a fortress on the Azov–Mozdok defensive line. It later became an administrative centre for the North Caucasus and is sometimes called the gateway to the Caucasus.
