Stendal Map Poster & Print
Stendal is the largest town in the Altmark, the flat northern part of Saxony-Anhalt. Its map centres on a well-defined old town: an oval of streets marked by the line of the former walls, now partly a green belt. Two medieval brick gates survive, the Uenglinger Tor and the Tangermünder Tor. Both stand out on the map at the edges of the historic core.
Inside the old town, streets gather around the market square and the large brick churches, including St Mary's and the cathedral of St Nicholas. Stendal was a member of the Hanseatic League, and its brick Gothic architecture reflects that wealth. Outside the ring, the town spreads into residential districts, railway lines and the open, flat farmland of the Altmark.
