Sudbury Map Poster & Print
Sudbury sits on the River Stour in south Suffolk, close to the border with Essex. On a map, the compact historic centre lies on higher ground above the river, while to the west and south the Stour winds through broad water meadows that have been grazed as common land for centuries. Roads converge on the old market area from every direction.
The town is the birthplace of the painter Thomas Gainsborough, born here in 1727; his childhood home is now Gainsborough's House, a museum and gallery, and a statue of him stands on Market Hill. Sudbury prospered in the wool and cloth trade and later became known for silk weaving, a craft that continues in the town today.
