Suratgarh lies in the Sri Ganganagar district of northern Rajasthan, at the edge of the Thar Desert. The land is flat and sandy, but irrigation canals have turned much of it into farmland. The town is also home to a large thermal power station and an important military station.
On a map, that shows up as long, straight lines. Canals and distributary channels cross the landscape in strict geometric patterns, railway lines run across it, and fields divide the ground into regular squares. The town itself is a compact grid with markets at its centre, set within this ruled landscape.
