Tamuín is in the Huasteca region of eastern San Luis Potosí, where the Sierra Madre Oriental gives way to low, warm plains. The town sits on the Tamuín River, and on a map the waterway's broad curves are the strongest natural line, with the urban grid packed against one bank.
The wider municipality is agricultural, and large rectangular fields, many of them sugarcane and pasture, stretch across the level ground. Highways and rural roads connect Tamuín to Ciudad Valles and the Gulf side of the country. From above, the landscape reads as open and generous, with long straight edges.
The municipality is also known for its archaeological heritage. Tamtoc, one of the most important Huastec sites, lies within its territory. A Tamuín map poster combines the grid of a working farm town with the river and plain that have drawn settlement here for centuries.
