Tessenderlo lies in the west of the Belgian province of Limburg, on the edge of the Kempen, a region of sandy soils, pine woods and former heathland. From above, the town is a mix of textures. A small historic centre has streets converging on the church. Ribbons of houses stretch along the main roads, and patches of forest and fields fill the gaps between them.
The name is familiar well beyond Belgium through Tessenderlo Group, the chemical company that grew from a plant founded here in the late nineteenth century. Industrial land near the town forms broad, clearly geometric blocks on the map, in contrast to the finer residential grain elsewhere. The municipality also includes several outlying villages, each with its own small cluster of streets.
At the heart of the old centre stands St Martin's Church, known for its richly carved late-Gothic rood screen, one of the finest of its kind in the Low Countries.
