Thandwe lies on Myanmar's western coast in Rakhine State, a little inland from the Bay of Bengal. The map shows a compact town along a river. Low forested hills rise behind it, and rice fields and roads lead west toward the coast.
Known in colonial times as Sandoway, the town has long been a regional centre for the surrounding villages. Its markets and pagodas sit in a modest grid of streets that thins quickly into the countryside.
Thandwe is best known outside Myanmar as the gateway to Ngapali Beach, a long stretch of sand a short distance away, served by a nearby airport. A Thandwe map poster shows the quiet town between the hills and the sea, the approach to one of the country's best known coastlines.
