Tīrthahalli lies in Shivamogga district of Karnataka, in the Malnad, the rain-soaked hill country along the Western Ghats. The town is built along the Tunga River, and on a map the river sets the shape of everything: streets run parallel to its banks, bridges cross it, and the built area thins out quickly into the green, hilly land beyond.
The riverbank holds the town's best-known sites. The Rameshwara temple stands beside the Tunga, and nearby Ramakunda is a spot in the river associated with local tradition and pilgrimage. Around the town, roads wind between low forested hills, paddy fields in the valleys and plantations of areca nut, a crop closely linked to the Malnad economy.
The area is also known as the home region of the Kannada poet Kuvempu, whose childhood house at nearby Kuppali is now a memorial.
