Tocache Map Poster
Tocache is the capital of the province of the same name in Peru's San Martín Department. It stands in the upper Huallaga valley, where the eastern Andes descend toward the Amazon lowlands. The Huallaga, wide and shifting, runs past the town. On a map its channels and sandbars spread across more ground than the streets do.
The town is laid out as a grid on the flatter ground by the river, and the highway that follows the valley runs straight along its length. Beyond the last blocks the map opens into farmland and forest. Cacao and other tropical crops now shape the economy of the province.
