Tuljāpur lies in the Dharashiv district of Maharashtra, on the uplands of the Balaghat range. The town is known across the state for the Tulja Bhavani temple, one of the most revered shrines of the goddess in Maharashtra, and the pattern of its streets reflects centuries of pilgrims arriving from every direction.
On a map, the old core is compact and irregular, with narrow lanes converging on the temple precinct, which sits lower than much of the surrounding town. Beyond that core, newer roads stretch out along the ridges, and the open, rolling plateau takes over within a short distance.
