From above, the town is a compact grid of streets and low buildings, with the main highway running through and farmland spreading across the plain around it. Low ridges rise at a distance, giving the surrounding landscape a gently shaped edge.
The town has a mixed population of Turkmen, Kurds and Arabs, and it has long been a meeting point between communities and regions.
