Vélez-Málaga is the main town of the Axarquía, the hilly country east of Málaga. The historic centre climbs a slope beneath the old Moorish fortress, and from above its streets bend and narrow as they rise. Lower down, newer districts spread out in more regular blocks towards the valley floor and the roads that run to the sea.
The municipality reaches the Mediterranean at Torre del Mar, a few kilometres south, where a straight promenade and a grid of holiday streets follow the shoreline. Between the two lies the valley of the Río Vélez, drawn as a broad, open band of fields. The Vélez-Málaga map poster shows both halves at once: the compact hilltop town and the long coastal edge.
The philosopher María Zambrano was born here, and the town keeps a foundation in her name. Around the centre, whitewashed lanes, churches and small plazas sit close together, while the surrounding hills are terraced with orchards.
