Vélingara is a town in Kolda Region, in the southeast of Senegal, not far from the borders with the Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. The land is flat and open, and on the map the town appears as a loose grid of wide streets, with compounds and courtyards filling the blocks.
Main roads meet in the town and lead toward Kolda, Tambacounda and the nearby borders, which makes Vélingara a busy stop for trade and travel in Upper Casamance. The roads show up as long, straight lines that run out of the grid into the surrounding countryside.
