Verona Map Poster & Print
Verona grew inside a pronounced loop of the Adige, which curves around the historic centre on its way down from the Alps. The Romans laid out their town within this bend in a precise grid, and the pattern still survives in the streets around Piazza delle Erbe, the old forum. From above, river and grid together give the city one of the clearest outlines in Italy.
Bridges stitch the two banks together, among them the Roman Ponte Pietra and the fortified Ponte Scaligero beside Castelvecchio. South of the old centre, Piazza Bra opens around the Arena, a first-century amphitheatre still used for opera each summer. The long line of Venetian and Austrian fortifications bends around the outer districts, a feature any Verona map poster traces well.
The city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous as the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. On the hills of the left bank, streets climb toward Castel San Pietro, their winding lines contrasting with the flat, orderly grid across the river, and the walls continue up the slopes in long angled segments.
