Viçosa lies in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, a region of rounded hills and green valleys. The town is best known as home to the Federal University of Viçosa, which grew out of an agricultural school founded in the 1920s and remains one of Brazil's leading centres for agricultural science. From above, the terrain shapes everything. Streets follow the valley floors and climb the slopes wherever they can.
The university campus is one of the largest features on the map. It covers a wide area of buildings, experimental fields, woodland and roads, set somewhat apart from the dense town centre. Its main entrance, the Quatro Pilastras gateway, is the town's most familiar symbol. Between campus and centre, neighbourhoods wind along the contours in irregular patterns.
