Wilkes-Barre lies in the Wyoming Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. From above, the downtown is organised around Public Square, with streets radiating out in a grid that is angled to follow the river. Along the water, the River Common and a long levee system create a green strip between the city and the channel.
The city grew with the anthracite coal industry, and mining shaped the valley for generations. In 1972 the floods of Hurricane Agnes badly damaged the city, which is one reason the levees are such a visible feature on the map today. Two universities, King's College and Wilkes University, sit close to the centre.
A Wilkes-Barre map poster shows a city defined by its setting: a wide river, a flat valley floor filled with streets, and ridges closing the view on either side. The bridges across the Susquehanna link it to Kingston and the west bank, tying the valley together.
