Wushan lies in the far northeast of Chongqing, on the Yangtze at the entrance to Wu Gorge, one of the Three Gorges. On a map, the town is squeezed between steep mountains and the water. Its streets climb the slopes in tight switchbacks and terraces, and the wide reservoir surface gives a clear edge along the foot of the town.
The Three Gorges Dam raised the water level of the Yangtze, and much of old Wushan was flooded and rebuilt on higher ground. The Daning River joins the Yangtze here, and its own narrow valleys, known as the Lesser Three Gorges, are a popular trip by boat. Wushan is also a starting point for cruises through Wu Gorge.
A Wushan map poster shows a town shaped almost entirely by relief and water. There is little flat ground. Streets are folded into the hillsides, bridges cross the rivers and the reservoir forms a smooth, broad shape. In monochrome, the contrast between dense, winding streets and open water is dramatic.
