Xàtiva lies in the Costera district of Valencia, where a long rocky ridge rises above the plain. The castle runs along its crest, and the historic town spills down the slope beneath it. On a map, the old quarter's narrow, bending streets sit tight against the hill, while newer districts spread out in straighter blocks toward the valley floor.
The town has an outsized place in European history. It was an early centre of paper-making in Europe during the Islamic period, and it was the home of the Borja family, which gave the Church two popes, Callixtus III and Alexander VI. In 1707, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the town was burned on the orders of Philip V.
