Yumurtalık Map Poster & Print
Yumurtalık lies on the northwestern shore of the Gulf of İskenderun in Adana Province, at the southern edge of the Çukurova plain. The town sits on a modest bay, and its map combines a compact pattern of streets behind the harbour with an open coastline running away on either side, where the land is low and lined with beaches.
In antiquity the site was known as Aegeae, and in the Middle Ages as Ayas, an important port of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. Marco Polo passed through Ayas in 1271 on his way east. Remains of its fortifications survive, including a small sea castle on an islet just offshore, which is still clearly visible on the map.
Along the coast to the west, shallow lagoons form a protected wetland known for its birdlife, adding broad shapes of water to the shoreline.
