Zhutang Map Poster & Print
Zhutang is a town in southwestern Yunnan, in the hill country near the border with Myanmar. The terrain determines everything here. On a map, the settlement is a small cluster of streets on the limited flat or gently sloping land, and the surrounding hills are steep and tightly folded.
The roads leading out of town do not run straight. They follow the contours of the land, winding along valleys and zigzagging up slopes to reach the villages above. On the hillsides, fields and plantations are cut into the slopes, and streams run down narrow valleys between the ridges. The region is home to several ethnic minority communities.
A Zhutang map poster is defined by curves rather than grids. The winding mountain roads spread outward from a small centre, creating an intricate, almost hand-drawn pattern. In black and white, this looks lively and detailed, very different from a map of a lowland town.
