Gila River
The river's wide, often dry bed runs past the town. On the map it shows as a broad, braided channel, the main natural line in an otherwise open landscape.

Florence Map Poster & Print
Florence, Arizona sits in the Sonoran Desert southeast of Phoenix, on the Gila River. Founded in the 1860s, it is the county seat of Pinal County. From above, its original downtown is a small, regular grid. Around it, newer subdivisions are laid out in curving streets, and beyond them the desert opens out in every direction.
The historic core holds a well-preserved collection of territorial-era buildings, including the old Pinal County Courthouse. Florence is also home to a large state prison complex, which accounts for a notable part of its official population and occupies a distinct block of land on the map.
A Florence map poster brings out the geometry of a desert town: straight section-line roads, the braided course of the Gila, and wide gaps between developments. In black and white, the sparseness becomes the design, and each street stands out clearly against the empty ground.

Historic downtown grid
The original town plan is a tight rectangle of blocks. Its older buildings, including the former county courthouse, sit on straight streets that contrast with the newer curving suburbs.
Section-line roads
Long, straight roads follow the survey grid across the desert. They frame the town in clean right angles and link it to the farmland and communities nearby.
