Agulu lies in Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria, on uplands where the land drops away into steep valleys. From above, the most noticeable feature is Agulu Lake, a calm body of water on the edge of the town. The roads follow ridges and connect the town's quarters, and houses are spread along them instead of forming one dense centre.
The lake is well known locally and is associated with traditional protection of the crocodiles living in it. The surrounding area is also known for severe gully erosion, part of the Agulu–Nanka zone, where heavy rain has cut deep ravines into the soft ground. On a map these gullies show up as abrupt breaks in the road network.
